Congratulations to Board Member David Der-wei Wang for being Elected Member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences
Apr 30, 2020The Foundation is pleased to announce that Board Member David Der-Wei Wang was elected as a new member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on April 23, 2020. Founded on May 4, 1780, the Academy’s mission has been to support notable researchers who excel in a broad array of fields while also working to advance the public good. The first President of this prestigious organization was John Adams (1735-1826), the United States’ first Vice-President and second President.
Board Member Wang is currently the Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese Literature at Harvard University, and was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2004. He also serves as head of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Inter-University Center for Sinology (CCK-IUC). Under his skilled leadership, the CCK-IUC has actively engaged in the organization of conferences, lectures, and symposia in order to further cooperation between scholars and academic institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia, thereby promoting the field of Chinese Studies across a wide range of disciplines in the humanities.
In 1997, Board Member Wang joined forces with the late Professor Nils Göran David Malmqvist and Professor Emeritus Pang-yuan Chi to launch the Modern Chinese Literature from Taiwan translation series published by Columbia University Press. These efforts have resulted in a series of 30 English translations, which have sparked great interest among scholars of European and American literature while earning recognition in the form of prestigious prizes. A French translation series was initiated in 2002. In addition, Board Member Wang has contributed to global scholarship by organizing book series such as Masters of Chinese Studies and Global Chinese Culture, all published by Columbia University Press. More recently, the “Taiwan Sinological Studies Series in Japanese Translation” project (published from 2014 to 2018) features recent writings of leading scholars based in or originally from Taiwan, thereby enhancing knowledge of Taiwanese scholarship worldwide.
Board Member Wang has devoted his distinguished career to the study of literature and the promotion of international cooperation in Chinese Studies. The Foundation is deeply proud of his outstanding achievements having earned recognition in the form of this great honor.
